South Korean-born artist Kimsooja has had a long, intense career full of installations, performances, photography, videos and site-specific project. This particular installation from 2006 is at the Palace de Cristal in Madrid.
This particular installation caught our eye, of course, because of all the bright colors. This artist has transformed the Crystal Palace in madrid into a stunning piece of art, without altering the structure itself. This can sometimes be a great feat for an artist - creating or installing a piece of art in a place where it cannot be altered. It creates an entirely new juxtaposition in itself - how do you approach such a problem? Luckily for this artist, all he had to do was lay a large mirror down on the floor inside the structure. He was also able to cover the crystal palace in a diffracting piece of material that helped intensify the reflections and colors. Another way to approach looking at this piece is to think about how this artist as used natural light and nature to create this piece - besides the mirror and refracting cloth, the artist simply took an idea (probably revolving around nature and color), and simply expanded upon it. He was able to create a great installation with minimal pieces and with no damage to the environment. Great concept.
